The Institute of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology (INCT) operates and maintains the only radiation facility in the country. The said facility is equipped with an accelerator Electronika 1010. This facility is certified in designing and performing radiation processing of medical devices in compliance with PN-EN ISO 13485:2005 standard. Currently, it serves more than 50 companies. Most of which are manufactures of medical, pharmaceutical and cosmetics products.
Since 1992, the INCT conducts a biennial training course for its clients. This training course is composed of lectures which primarily aims to educate its clients in choosing the best method and practices that they can apply to their respective products. The 11th Training Course entitled, “ School for Radiation Sterilization and Microbiological Decontamination” was held in INCT last October 20-21, 2011. The training course covered a wide variety of topics regarding the use radiation sterilization.
A total of 25 participants from different companies were given lectures on the following topics: 1) Marie Sklodowska-Curie: Precursor of Radiation Sterilization; 2) Review of Different Types of Sterilization Method; 3) Effect of Ionizing Radiation on Matter; 4) Biological Effects and Risk of Ionizing Radiation; 5) Microbiological Aspects for Product Radiation Sterilization Process; 6) Electron Beam Accelerator Used for Sterilization; 7) Isotope Sources used for Sterilization; 8) Dosimetric Control of Radiation Sterilization of Medical Devices; 9) Performance Qualification: Focused on Radiation Dose Determination; 10) The Role of Packaging Materials in Radiation Sterilization; 11) Sterilization of Allografts; 12) Sterilization in the Context of Documentation Registration and GMP requirements; 13) Risk Analysis in Radiation Sterilization Processes; 14) Modification of Polymeric Materials with Ionizing Radiation; 15) Accredited Laboratory for the Identification of Irradiated Foods; 16) Radiation Decontamination of Herbs and Spices: The Regulation of European Union (EU); 17) Laboratory for Measurement of Technological Doses; 18) Can we expect any changes in Regulations Concerning Radiation Sterilization
The Lecturers came from the following Institutions: a) Institute of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology (INCT); b) Central Tissue Bank (CTB), Warsaw Medical University (WMU); d) Pharmaceutical company Polfa Warszawa S.A.; f) Technical University of Lodz (TUL); g) Technochemia. The result of the training course includes abstract proceedings and technical lecture presentations.
