On March 10-14, 2025, the first Research Coordination Meeting was held at the Institute of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology (INCT) as a part of the F22080 project “Mitigating Greenhouse Gases using Radiation Technology”. The meeting was attended by 9 representatives from 9 IAEA Member States: Argentina, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Poland, South Korea, Tunisia, the USA and Germany (online). On behalf of the IAEA, the meeting was attended by Dr. BumSoo Han, Technical Officer of Radiochemistry and Radiation Technology Section IAEA. Thus ending his almost eight years of very fruitful work in this organization, which brought many important activities for the benefit of the MS. INCT honored him with a crystal vase engraved with words of gratitude.
The meeting was devoted to the possibilities of using of radiation technologies to convert greenhouse gases into less harmful compounds and to develop new materials for the capture, processing and storage of greenhouse gases.
During the meeting, representatives of individual Member States presented their previous work and achievements in the use of radiation technologies in environmental applications, especially concerning greenhouse gases. They also presented their research plans, which will be carried out within the IAEA project in the years 2025-2029. On this basis, emerging needs and gap areas in research on reducing of the content of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and possibilities of cooperation between project participants were discussed.
During the meeting, participants had the opportunity to visit INCT with particular emphasis on the Radiation Sterilization Station for Medical Devices and Allografts and electron accelerators installed in the Center for Radiation Research and Technologies.
