NEW SILICA MATERIALS (PIGMENTS) WITH BIOCIDAL ACTIVITY

New water insoluble silica materials (pigments) with biocidal activity (SBM) have been elaborated in INCT. SBM contain biocidal quaternary N-alkylammonium salts such as Preventol (Bayer) or Bardap (Lonza) bound stably to silica (SiO 2-Si(OH)4) precipitated from water glass. SBM can be precipitated from water glass on carriers (C) such as bentonite, sand, CaCO3, TiO2 etc, creating carrier-SBM pigments (C-SBM). Carriers used as additives to building materials obtain new useful properties as C-SBM pigments. Coloured SBM pigments containing acid dyes were also obtained.Biocidal activity of SBM and C-SBM materials was confirmed in tests on algae, fungi and bacteria. SBM and
C-SBM are products of wide potential applications, among others as biocidal additives to paints and various solid materials used in building industry and as agents destroying algae and bacteria in open water reservoirs. SBM and C-SBM are cheap and safe for environment. They are claimed in a patent application. More information on request. Co-operation in further developing SBM materials appreciated. Fungicidal effects of WG-Pr pigment added to white gypsum samples are demonstrated on the photographs. Biological investigations are carried out in Institute of Wood Protection, Warsaw Agricultural University by Research Group of Associate Professor K.J.Krajewski.
