The results of the research work on the detection of irradiation in five pharmaceuticals
containing dry herbal extracts, sugars, talc, colloidal silica and magnesium stearate are presented.
The experiments have been accomplished with the use of model samples exposed to 5 kGy of gamma rays and
subsequently stored for 2 years in the Institute of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology (INCT).
The non-irradiated samples have been examined for comparison too. Two standardized detection methods,
thermoluminescence measurements on isolated silicate minerals (TL) and electron paramagnetic
resonance spectroscopy (EPR) as used for the detection of crystalline sugar, have been applied.
The aim of present investigation was to prove the usefulness of both detection techniques for the
detection of irradiation in herbal pharmaceuticals containing vegetal components and mono- and
disaccharides as filling agents.
